Great article. Blew my mind. If you could write a "how-to" scrape article it would be really good.

That is a great idea. Instead of trying to sell it, why don't you develop it?

Do you know the owner of PlentyOfFish.com is making millions of dollars, and he is developing it by himself?

Don't waste time selling this, develop it yourself. You will make wayyy more money, and once it starts to work you can sell it then.

One point. Naming it STD anything is bad. Anyone who has an STD is not going to want to advertise it. Perhaps a normal dating site (normal name) that has a special setting, where once you label yourself as having this STD other people who have it can see it, that could be better. Then a user can say "I use datingfriends.com" and not alert everyone to the fact that they have an STD. As it is, no one will tell anyone about the site, because doing so says they have an STD.

That is probably why people aren't willing to pay that much money for it.

Otherwise, great idea.

I think the security guy/sheriff was actually burning unused cycles by responding to his duties. working 9-5 is a passive activity in which a large amount of your decision making and natural behavior is submitted for manipulation by others.

to listen to a podcast, download iTunes onto your computer. Then use it to navigate to the podcast directory, where you can find all sorts of interesting content.

Or you can just look in google for any of the podcast names mentioned above.

An interesting argument, but couldn't people continue to scrape the Web sites that are attempting to sell their data?

From the article, people try to make perfect better. We can apply this to iRent2u.com in the way that we provide better service than other rental service company. For example, we provide everything for rental. Everything you want to rent is a click on iRent2u.com.

Most people in the US need cars and furnitures. So iRent2u.com is a web service for people to rent these things and would be a smart business move.

In same cases, auctions manipulate peoples actions, motivating them to spend more than they wanted. But I think in most cases, people will stop bidding if the price is over than what they want. I think people search online shopping because they want to buy what they can't buy in the physical store or they want buy for cheaper price. In this case, the power of auctions maybe don't work well except the rental object is very valuable.
For upsell concept, if the product or service you provide is good, then the customer is very likely to purchase the product or service from the same provider. Just like Douglas said, we can provide trial or combined trial product for cheaper price.

According to the first question, I think it is difficult to use the power of auctions to increase the rental prices. I think the same part of Ebay and iRent2u.com is that they are web services for people to find something “cheaper” than retail stores. It is correct that people willing to repeatedly spend small amounts of money to avoid outbid. However, the premise is that this product is “worth” for the bidder to chase the price- to spend more money to win the bid. For example, 2007 All-Star Game Kobe Bryant limited edition jacket (only 100 jackets are made) or signed Dered Jeter baseball bat. If the product is not that valuable, people won’t spend lots of money to bid it. Therefore, if the renter lease the worth product such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, or limited edition jacket…, etc., the power of auctions may work. Besides, I think that we could use the power of auctions, but we can’t somehow control them. Take Ebay for example, sometimes we think that this product is worth $200, but the winning bid may be only $100 or less. However, sometimes we think that the product is worth $50, but the winning bid may be $100 or more. There are some risks for bidders and sellers. The good thing is that renters can keep on leasing their stuffs until broken. The final value of the leasing product may greater than the cost of it. For example, if the renter bought a product at $20, he could break-even when he leases it for four years and $5 per year. Therefore, if he leases his product for ten years he could earn $30.

According to the second question, I think that to apply the “bonus lesson” to iRent2u.com, we can set up an option for the renter to set up a trial or not before leasing. If willing to set up a trial, the renter can lease a “trial product” for 20% of the rental price for one week. On the customer side, if he tried the product and likes it, he can simply upgrade from trial to rental on the web site. Besides, we may set up a function called “combined trial” which means that customers could use cheaper price to use the trials when they rent two or more products
